North Korea Fails To Meet Deadline

The United States has confirmed that North Korea had failed to give a detailed declaration of its nuclear activities by the set deadline of December 31. The United States, Japan, and South Korea have all expressed their disappointment at North Korea’s failure.

North Korea’s pledge was part of the disarmament deal where they would receive large amounts of international aid. The country has agreed to six-party talks in February. North Korea, South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, and the United States are involved in the talks.

Yongbyon started to be disabled in October.

While the disablement is not completed, analysts say that this is due to technical problems. A bigger concern is the delay in producing a written statement declaring the nuclear activities.

The declaration will determine if North Korea will keep its promise to become nuclear-free.
