North Korea said it will keep to its side of a deal to disarm its weapons in return for aid. It expects Washington DC to d the same thing. Currently, the country is in the process of disabling its reactor at Yongbyon. The letter was sent from President George W. Bush to Kim Jong-il earlier in the month.
This was a verbal response instead of a written one. It was through North Korea’s delegation located in New York.
“We’ll live up to our side and hope you’ll live up to your side,” said the official. He spoke anonymously to reporters with a paraphrased version of the response. It’s unknown if the message is directly from Kim Jong-il, the leader of North Korea.
According to this deal, North Korea will declare its nuclear programs and disable the Yongbyon plant by the end of 2007. In return, the United States will begin to have normal relations with North Korea along with removing the country of its lists of state sponsored terrorism and trade sanctions.
