Widely mourned in J&K, Information Department condoles Chiragi’s demise; Renzu pays tribute
Jammu, February 02 (Scoop News) –Noted Indian Urdu journalist and writer, Mohan Chiragi breathed his last on Monday evening in Kolkata. He was in mid 70s and was ailing for some time. J&K Governor N. N. Vohra, and Chief Minister Omar Abdulla have deeply condoled the demise of veteran journalist Mohan Chiragi, describing him as a vocal guardian of freedom of expression.
Mr. Chiragi who started his career from Srinagar in Kashmir, rose to the level of the Chief Editor of National Urdu daily, Quami Awaz. His autobiograpy " Barf Mein Aag" became very popular in and outside Kashmir.
Chiragi had many awards to his credit, including the National Harmony Award for working relentlessly for the cause of communal amity. Chiragi was also the member of National Integration Council He was depressed after his displacement from Kashmir in 1989 and he continued to write on Kashmir till his last breath.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today deeply condoled the demise of veteran journalist Mohan Chiragi, describing him as a vocal guardian of freedom of expression.
In a message, the Chief Minister recalled the contribution of Chiragi in the field of Urdu media and said that he has set a trend of healthy journalism which will continue to guide the budding journalists. In his death, Omar said, the media in general and the State in particular has lost a thoughtful journalist whose writings will inspire the people for a long.The Chief Minister has conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family.
The death of Mohan Chiragi, a noted Urdu journalist, who passed away in Kolkata, was widely mourned in Jammu and Kashmir today.
A condolence meeting of the officers and staffers of the Department of Information and Public Relations was held in Srinagar, in which the contribution of Chiragi was recalled.
Expressing deep shock and grief over the passing away of Chiragi, Director Information, Khwaja Farooq Renzu recalled his long association with the department and said that he was always like a family member and an esteemed colleague.
Renzu described Chiragi a great son of soil in whose writings the essence of the Kashmir’s composite culture was always discernible.
Tributes were paid to Chiragi at the condolence meeting and sympathies expressed with the bereaved family.
