Jammu, October 17 (Scoop News)-Prof. Bhim Singh, Chief Patron of National Panthers Party & Member of National Integration Council, Shri Harsh Dev Singh, MLA, Chairman-JKNPP, Shri Yashpaul Kundal, MLA, General Secretary-JKNPP, Bansi Lal Sharma, Advisor-JKNPP, Shri Partap Singh Jamwal, President-NPSU, Shri H.C Jalmeria, Advocate & Ms. Anita Thakur, General Secretaries-JKNPP, Shri Pushvinder Manhas, Sr. Vice President, Young Panthers and hundreds of NPP activists paid heavy tributes to the Student Martyrs who were killed by Police bullets inside GGM Science College on 17th & 18th October, 1966 during the Congress rule. The Students Congress led by Bhim Singh was demanding establishment of Jammu University, Technical Colleges, Ayurvedic College and upgrading the status of agricultural graduates at par with MBBS and Engineering graduates.
The students had launched a movement under the leadership of Bhim Singh. Three students were killed namely Brij Mohan, Subhash Chandra, Gulshan Handa inside GGM Science premises whereas one student leader S. Gurcharan Singh was killed on 18th October, 1966 in Kanak Mandi, Jammu while the students’ procession was marching through the Jammu streets. Senior Superintendent Police who shot S. Gurcharan Singh in fact aimed at Bhim Singh, leader of the Students Movement but could not get Bhim Singh because a senior officer from District Administration, M.P. Khosla had intervened and saved Bhim Singh. This was revealed by Khosla in Delhi this year. M.P. Khosla has also served at Chief Secretary of J&K in 1987-88.
It was because of the intervention of Mrs. Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India that a Commission of Inquiry was set up which had held several police officers and heads of administration in Jammu for the genocide of the students. More than 53 students were injured in the Science College massacre.
While addressing the students and NPSU activists at the Memorial Site of the Student Martyrs, Prof. Bhim Singh while paying tributes to the student martyrs said that 47 years ago our students leaders were killed in 1966 who were demanding a University, in 1975 four students were martyred during Congress rule in Kishtwar who were demanding a Degree College and a student S. Bariyam Singh was shot dead by the police in 1978 while the Poonch students demanding just college amenities for students. He reminded that NPP Legislator Shri Harsh Dev Singh became Education Minister in 2002 he gave 20 colleges in J&K without causing or hurting any student. He said that discrimination against the students and the youth has been continuing and it shall not stop till the end of NC-Congress rule in J&K.
Harsh Dev Singh also addressed the students at the Memorial Site. Several hundred students and youth took the oath at the Memorial Site on the Student Martyrs Day that, “We the people of J&K shall fight for the justice to everybody and shall eradicate communalism, criminalization, authoritarianism, all forms of corruption and violence so that a secular society is promoted so that all of us live in peace, honour and harmony.”
