Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board, (SPCB) observed
‘National Pollution Prevention Day’ (NPPD) to commemorate thousands of commoners
who lost lives in ‘Bhopal Gas Tragedy, in 1982 when Methyl Isocyanides leaked
from a factory ‘Union Carbide’ killing hundreds of people and rendering
thousands disabled. A seminar on “Prevention & Control of Industrial
Pollution” at ASSI Bhawan, industrial Area, Gangyal, Jammu was organized
wherein Commissioner/Secretary Forests Shantmanu, Chairman, SPCB, Lal Chand,
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, (PCCF) & Director SFRI, R.D.Tiwari,
Member Secretary PCB, Dr. Mohit Gera, Director Industries, B.S. Dua and T.S.
Reen, President, Association of Industries and others delivered speeches
regarding creating awareness among the masses about the subject.
Whereas, Regional Directorate Kashmir SPCB observed the day by
organizing an awareness program, in association with Indian Youth Climate Network,
on polythene carry bags involving the students of Eco-Clubs from different
schools. During the program at Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Amira Kadal and Karan Nagar,
the students took polythene carry bags from shoppers, vendors, shopkeepers, etc.
and replaced the same with eco-friendly paper carry bags by PCB. Students also
made efforts to aware people about hazards of polythene. Polythene carry bags have been banned in Jammu
& Kashmir vide SRO 182 in the light of Non-biodegradable Material, Management,
Handling and Disposal Rules, 2009. “Such campaigns have been launched in past
also and will be conducted on valley-vide in future. We will also take action
against the defaulters and dealers found still trade in banned material” Directorate
affirmed.
Ministers, bureaucrats and heads of various departments are
fond of delivering speeches on different occasion to mark and observe different
days of public interest. Instead of organizing on spot workshops, volunteer
inspections and random checkups at different places to impart practical
awareness and education among common people, concerned stalwarts prefer to
fulfill their duties by delivering speeches. Billion dollar question arises
that as if present ministers and bureaucrats are raising voice for creating
awareness among masses regarding various issues of human interest then what
were their predecessors for the last six decades.
