According to James Appathurai who is speaking for Jaap de Hoop Scheffer the secretary general for Nato, he states that the United Kingdom is contemplating on increasing the number of troops to be sent to Afghanistan. They are contemplating about sending reinforcements for the nearly eight-thousand troops already in Afghanistan. However, any plans for a possible reinforcement have not been confirmed by the Ministry of Defense.
At the NATO summit at the Netherlands during October 24-25, Japp de Hoop Scheffer plans to call on the member states to increase their number of troops in Afghanistan. He said during a radio interview that the Dutch nor the Canadians aren’t going to leave the southern part of Afghanistan. He added that the British are talking about increasing their presence in that area of Afghanistan.
Scheffer says: “We are not pessimistic at all. We hope the Dutch will stay, we hope the Canadians will stay and we are working to convince them to do that in one form or another.”
They have already stated that the United Kingdom is bearing most of the burden saying that it’s too much.
In regards, the British are talking about increasing the presence. However, nothing has been confirmed yet about possible deployment of additional troops. Nothing has been decided yet.
It’s unknown if the governments of the Netherlands or Canada plan to increase their presence, stay as they are, or reduce the number of troops. They haven’t finalized their plans yet, either.
NATO’s secretary general hopes that the member parties will listen to him and increase their military presence.
