Before the March 4 contests, US Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama would address Latino Evangelicals at a small prayer meeting. This is one group that had continuously voted for rival US Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. However, Clinton has been losing her lead amongst Latinos.
Texas is a “must win” state for Clinton.
At this small prayer meeting, Obama would address the problems that affect the Hispanic community let alone Texas’ Hispanic community.
“Our conscience cannot rest so long as schools from East L.A. to West Chicago to Brownsville are crumbling or overcrowded or under funded, so long as Hispanics are more likely to lave school than any other Americans,” Obama explained.
He then continued with saying: “Because when our children aren’t getting the world-class education they need to reach their dreams and compete in our economy, that’s not just a Hispanic problem, it’s an American problem.”
Also, Obama would address one hot issue in the Democratic race which was the “division” between blacks and Latinos. Obama said that he rejects that notion. He adds that this notion is false.
Obama in that regard said: “Whenever I hear folks talk about the “brown-black” divide, I remember my days as a community organizer, when I brought African-Americans and Hispanics together to fight a rising drop-out rate in our schools.”
He continued with saying: “I remember my days as a civil rights lawyer, when I worked with my Hispanic brothers and sisters to protect our voting rights. And I remember May Day 2006, when I marched shoulder-to-shoulder with the Hispanic community to stand up for comprehensive immigration reform.”
The main focus of Obama’s speech was immigration which is an inevitable topic in the Democratic, Republican, and general debates coming up in the future.
Obama said that he refuses to accept the distrust directed at all immigrants; but, at all Hispanics as well. He said that everybody is a child of God and that the Bible tells them to love all neighbors regardless of origins.
