While in Wayne, Pennsylvania, presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, has attacked presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona on the issue of appointing judges to the United States Supreme Court. Obama gave the suggestion that McCain would overturn Roe w. Wade.
Obama had continued to express his support on the recent ruling by the US Supreme Court that said the detainees of Guantanamo Bay do have rights. This ruling was condemned by both US President George W. Bush and McCain. McCain said that this goes against the number one issue, national security of this country. This could be tied to McCain’s main campaign platform, which is Iraq.
Now, he attacked McCain on the possibility of putting ultra conservative judges to the highest court.
“John McCain has basically said he would appoint judges who don’t see a right to privacy, and as a consequence, would be likely to overturn Roe v Wade,” Obama said to a small group at the town hall meeting. He added: “You’re just one justice away from that.”
Obama would cite John Stevens, Senior Associate Justice, as an example. He said that someone like Stevens could possibly retire soon. Obama said that it would happen when either he or McCain is in office. Then, he proceeded to explain who is elected will affect the decisions that are ruled on in the lower courts.
He said: “If you want to preserve civil liberties, if you want to preserve civil rights, if you want to make sure that the courts are looking out for consumers and not just big business then that should be a factor in your decision making in this election.”
This is the next thing that Obama has attacked McCain on. The next thing to do is to wait for the response from the McCain campaign.
