While presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois seems to be getting many people on board with his campaign, there are still some voting blocs that Obama has yet to win over. These are two voting blocs that have appealed to Senator Hillary Clinton of New York during the Democratic Race.
The obvious bloc that Obama has to reach out to would be the supporters of Hillary Clinton. Most of them still feel upset and bitter that Clinton was not the Democratic nominee. Though polls say that Obama is picking up on them, there are still plenty that are frustrated enough to vote for presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona instead.
The other bloc would be the Latino voters. This has been a strong voting bloc of Clinton. However, McCain is too planning to reach out to Latino voters. GOP strategists have said that McCain needs to be in good standing with the Latino community if he wishes to win this November.
So far, McCain’s idea about immigration is appealing to Latino voters. But, McCain risks further alienating the conservative bloc of the GOP. Still, the Latino voters are counted as swing voters.
According to Arturo Vargas, of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, Obama did not have the chance to introduce himself to the Latino voters. Vargas adds that Obama needs to get out there and understand their issues.
The Latino vote was crucial for some of Clinton’s victories.
In regards to immigration, Obama’s campaign said that it strongly supports legal immigration into the US before obtaining naturalization. Recently, it seems that Obama does have the chance to take the Cuban-American voting bloc from McCain.
If McCain wishes to win Florida, he would need that voting bloc.
