On Friday, the group endorsed Barack Obama after the group allowed members to vote the last two days on endorsing him or Hillary Clinton. Obama had defeated Clinton in that vote by seventy percent to thirty percent.
“Our members’ endorsement of Sen. Obama is a clear call for a new America at this crucial moment in history,” said Eli Pariser, the Executive Director of MoveOn.org. Pariser added: “Seven years of the disastrous policies of the Bush Administration have left the country desperate for change. We need a president who will bring to bear the strong leadership and vision required to end the war in Iraq, provide health care to every American, deal with our climate crisis, and restore America’s standing in the world.”
MoveOn.org said that it has 1.7 million members across the Super Tuesday states and is now actively seeking to recruit volunteers on Obama’s behalf.
“We’ll be able to immediately jump into action in support of Sen. Obama’s candidacy,” according to Pariser. Pariser added: “We’ve learned that the key to achieving change in Washington without compromising core values is having a galvanized electorate to back you up. And Barack Obama has our members ‘fired up and ready to go’ on that front.”
September of last year, MoveOn.org generated waves by running a full-page ad in the New York Times that asked of General David Petraeus.
