Barack Obama has made it clear by saying he is more suited than Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party’s nominee to beat US Republican hopeful John McCain in the general election.
“In terms of electability, I believe that I am attracting new voters and independent voters in a way that Senator Clinton has not been able to do,” Obama said to a crowd.
Obama added: “If Senator McCain is the nominee, we can’t start off with the same playing field and expect to win.”
He would cite the Nevada caucus as an example that he is able to reach a bigger and greater variety of voters than Hillary Clinton did. Obama added that her supporters would probably be more likely to take his side if he is elected the Democratic Party’s nominee.
“I am confident that I will get her votes if I am the nominee, it’s not clear that she would get the votes I got if she were the nominee,” he explained.
While Obama gave praise to McCain, he gave criticism that the GOP hopeful was attached to President George W. Bush’s policies. He said that the American people are looking for a different way to approach things.
Then Obama was asked if has pursued endorsements from former opponents in the Democratic race: Bill Richardson and John Edwards. He did say that he spoke to Edwards the day he dropped out of the race. Obama did ask for Edwards endorsement.
“He and I shared a fundamental view that it is not enough to change political parties in the White House,” Obama said in regards to Edwards. He added: “You’ve got to bring about more fundamental change.”
Obama said he is not expecting to get an endorsement from Richardson today when he visits New Mexico. But, he said that he would love to be surprised.
