Today is February 12, which is the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is the sixteenth President of the United States. He was the United States President during the United States Civil War. Lincoln was responsible for the ending of the enslavement of African-Americans. During his presidency, Lincoln achieved very interesting things. However, Lincoln’s Birthday is not a federally recognized holiday. There are some US states that observe it.
Because of this, Washington’s Birthday was changed into Presidents Day. It would to honor Lincoln. But, it would extend to honor all US Presidents. Today, US President Barack Obama called upon all Americans. This is particularly addressed to those in political office.
Obama called on Americans to be generous to political opponents and valuing unity as a nation. Today would be the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Obama would reflect upon Lincoln and the US Civil War.
He said Lincoln could have made the Confederates suffer and explained that it was not the case. Obama explained that Lincoln wanted the Confederates to go back home and start living life.
Obama said: “That was the only way, Lincoln knew, to repair the rifts that had torn this country apart. It was the only way to begin the healing that our nation so desperately needed.”
Overall, it looks like Obama’s way of paying homage and tribute to Abraham Lincoln. Doris Kearns Goodwin, a Pulitzer-winning author said that Obama is possibly looking up to Lincoln as a mentor. Obama has given his message to Americans everywhere: follow Lincoln’s example.
