Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama will be on CBS, NBC, Fox, Univision, MSNBC, BET, and TV One tonight with a 30 minute advertisement in favor of his candidacy. The ad will also be closed-captioned for the hearing impaired. Airtime is 8:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Pacific. I will add a link to streaming video as soon as I have one.
This unprecedented ad buy is possible because of Obama’s overwhelming grassroots fundraising, which has brought him over $600 million in donations, averaging $109 per donation. This contrasts with the $87 million John McCain is able to spend on his general election campaign, due to his opting in to Federal financing. Of course, Senator McCain is also supported by the Republican National Committee and private Political Action Committee (PAC) “soft money” so the differential is not as big as it seems. But McCain’s campaign certainly could not afford to buy 30 minute blocks on 3 major networks in these last days of the campaigns. Obama has declined to take PAC money for his bid.
The big question is: what will the advertisement be? A documentary? A speech? Positive or negative? Tug at our heartstrings?
The only thing we know for sure right now is we’ll be watching.
