Latest public opinion polls conducted by reputable polling companies in America and elsewhere in the world, showed that Barack Obama is leading Republican candidate John McCain by a small margin. Surveys also indicate that if Obama happens to be a non-black candidate, he would be winning the race by a very wide margin.
But what is wrong with being black? I thought America has matured after the post Martin Luther King era. The world applauded when the American people burried the hatchet and moved on to embrace their minority American brothers regardless of color, race and religion. Gone are the days of racial segregation and discrimination after Martin Luther King gave up his own life for peace, equality and freedom for all Americans.
Now the issue of color and religion are being used by politicians including the McCain drumbeaters. What is happening to America, a great symbol of freedom and equality in the world.?
American voters should perhaps look at the candidate’s qualifications and his platform for the political, social and economic reforms rather than the candidate’s color or religion.
America has a very strong two-party system and both parties play a big role in formulating major policies and decisions for the party in power. Besides, the next President’s choice of Cabinet members will be decided on the basis of their qualifications.
So why make the isue of color and religion a deciding factor in electing a good American President?
