Barack Obama, who was defeated in an upset victory in New Hampshire by Hillary Rodham Clinton, has won a key labor endorsement on Wednesday. He had received the endorsement made on the behalf of the Culinary Workers Union, Local 226, and UNITE HERE.
This is the first endorsement from a major national union that Barack Obama has received.
“Our organization and our members will do everything in our power to see that he reaches the White House this fall, because we know he will bring working Americans with him,” said Bruce Raynor, president of UNITE HERE.
D. Taylor, the Culinary Workers Union secretary-treasurer, had praised Obama’s work with the sister union in Chicago. Taylor also said that Obama would appeal across the diverse ranks of the union.
“We’re not just Wonderbread here, we got pumpernickel, we got whole wheat, we got rye. We’re excited about that. That’s America. That’s why Senator Obama excites us and excites the country,” Taylor had explained.
This could affect the outcome in Nevada.
Clinton had already enjoyed solid support from Nevada’s Democratic establishment along with a hefty lead. But, Obama has sought outside support instead from the pool of experienced activists.
On Tuesday, the Nevada chapter of the Service Employees International Union also voted to endorse Obama.
