While the newest poll launched by CBS News shows that there was well received recognition to US Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama, in regards to the recent speech on race and Rev. Wright who has been made notorious for his “God Damn America” speech which brought for the controversy; problems still remain.
Obama’s speech of bringing change and bringing people together looks to be fading. The percentage of those that believe Obama is the candidate of change and unity has declined since the end of February. In a sense, the month of March has been somewhat good for Democratic co-frontrunner Hillary Clinton. It could be deemed somewhat good and not great for Clinton due to the incident with New York Representative Geraldine Ferraro and her comments about Obama and his race.
That caused backlash from the Obama campaign. Ferraro ended up resigning as part of the Clinton campaign finance committee. However, Ferraro is not out of the picture yet.
But, presumptive GOP nominee John McCain looks to benefit the most from all of this.
In regards to the recent poll, 63 percent said Obama made a good speech on race and agree with his views. 71 percent felt Obama was good in explaining the relationship with Rev. Wright.
However, when asked about Obama’s ability to unify the country, the number dropped down by 15 points. Now, it is as 52 percent. Back in February, it was at 67 percent. Still, his rating of being favorable still carries more weight than his rating of being unfavorable.
But, it has hurt Obama’s ability to chip away at Republican voters. After the incident, a quarter of Republicans are thinking about not voting for Obama.
While the poll shows that Obama made a good speech, problems still remain.
