This month, we asked Rachel Sterne, the Founder of GroundReport.com, to select the Recognition Awards for October 2010. Reflecting back over the past four years, here are her most eclectic picks for October 2010.
Vijay Kumar – Most Awesome Producer
Harriet – Fearless Champion of Human Rights
Nathan Rothstein – A Single Article Can Have An Impact
Ceasefireliberia – Healing Wounds Through Communication
Gglover – Hyperlocal Journalism at its Best
Ronavidad – Best Sports Reporter
Matt Schafer – Great Coverage of the US Media
Nomadicasian – Welcoming Back a Prolific Voice
JC South – Best GroundReport University Project
Creston Media – Best Public Relations Professional
Vijay Kumar reports from India and covers Jammu and Kashmir. Vijay is the most prolific reporter on GroundReport with 1,566 articles. We recommend that he create his own Publication so all of his work can be organized in one place.
Harriet reports from Zimbabwe and describes herself as “Viomak’s publicity officer. Viomak is a Zimbabwean protest musician, an activist and human rights defender.” It takes a lot of guts to be a human rights defender in Zimbabwe there days. Some day we hope to be able to post audio on GroundReport (we can’t afford the high speed network, computers and storage devices right now) so we can hear Viomak’s music.
Nathan Rothstein reports from Louisiana and his article on the election of Mitch Landrieu as the Mayor of New Orleans was picked up by a large number of Internet news outlets. Nathan shows that just one article can make a difference.
Ceasefireliberia reports about events in Liberia and the Liberian Diaspora from New York City. Ruthie Ackerman is the driving force behind Ceasefireliberia which describes itself as “a multimedia project, which aims to document the Liberian experience on both sides of the ocean. It includes a book, documentary film work, and now a blog. The goal of the blog is to connect the Liberian community in Liberia with the rest of the Diaspora in order to create a dialogue between those who fled during the war and those who remained in Liberia”.
Gglover reports from Binghamton, New York and covers hyperlocal news concerning SUNY Binghamton and the academic publications of its facility. Gglover articles are just plain interesting and well written.
Ronavidad (Romeo Navidad) reports from Saudi Arabia and describes himself as “A broadcaster and hard-hitting crusader for sensible and responsible email forwarding and distribution as not to abuse human dignity and the modern communication technology available now. Editor-in-chief of The EPBL Chronicle – a newsletter of the Eastern Province Basketball League – a non-profit sports organization that stages the biggest and most prestigious expatriates’ basketball tournaments in the entire Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia since 1987.” What GroundReport loves about Romeo is his passionate reporting on these sporting events. They remind us that sports are really important and that they feed the human spirit.
Matt Schafer won a Recognition Award last month and this month Rachel felt he deserved another. Matt reports from the State of Louisiana and posted 8 articles in October. Many of his articles deal with the US Media. Matt articles are very well written and qualify as the highest quality journalism.
Nomadicasian is one of GroundReports most prolific writers. He has posted 404 articles on a wide range of topics and he reporters from Philippines. He disappeared for a year and resurfaced yesterday with an article on the media. Nomadicasian, welcome back to GroundReport.
Jcsouth is the username of “Capital News Service which is staffed by students from the School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond”. Jcsouth also goes by the name,
Crestonmedia is another interesting contributor to GroundReport. Diane T. Creston is the spokesperson for Lance Heft, leading Life Mentor, author, business man and entrepreneur. She has embraced GroundReport as a channel to publicize the work of an important author and she has done it with class and elegance.
Congratulations to Rachel Sterne’s eclectic recipients of this month’s Recognition Awards.
The Recognition Awards are made possible through a grant from an anonymous benefactor. The advertising revenue generated by the site is used to fund its computer infrastructure and technical support. Each award winner will receive $30 via Paypal. Paypal is the only economical way to transfer the money so all GR reporters need to add a Paypal Address to their profile.
GroundReport is committed to providing a free platform on which all journalists can have a voice and all points of view and interests across the spectrum are represented.
