Former Finance and Foreign Affairs Minister, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, was on thurday named Managing Director of the World Bank Group (WBG) to oversea the region of Africa, European, South Asia, and Central Asia.
Okonjo-Iweala, who also has oversight responsibility for human resources, will assume office on December 1. She had in 2003 resigned her position as world Bank vice presiden to serve as Finance Ministry in Nigeria.
She resigned from former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s cabinet in August 2006, barely a month after she was moved to the foreign affairs ministry.
World Bank President, Robert Zoellick, who announced the appointment of Okonjo-Iweala, enthrusted that her experience and unique skills would be valuable to the bank.
She is expected to join Managing Director, Juan Jose Daboub and Graeme Wheeler; Executive Vice President Lars Thunel (IFEC) and Yukiko Omura (MIGA); Vincenzo La Via, at the top level of the WBG management.
Zoellick said "As an outstanding minister of Finance and finance and foreign Ministr in Nigeria, Ngozi helped lead the country"s reform program on issues of fiscal prudence, transparency of government accounts, good governance, and Anti-corruption.
