As a citizen of India,a neighbour country of Pakistan,I have got something to say about what Parvez Mushraf is doing on the eve of elections scheduled by him on February 18 th.So far so good, India is maintaining a golden silence of what is happening in Pakistan, of course in a true democratic spirit and international understanding and strictly adhereing to the policy of non-interference, one of the principles of Panch Sheel, propounded by India’s former and late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
But that does not preclude me as a responsible reporter of ‘Ground Report’ from making my own comments of what is happening in my neighbnourhood. Iam happy to note that elections are round the corner and due on February 18 th.
PPP having lost its Charismatic leader Mrs.Bhutto to a human bomb deviced by the terrorists,is under the young leadership of her son and being guided by her husband. If PPP goes ahead with the elections, the sympathy wave may somewhat work in its favour, apart from the previous records and standing of the party in the past when it was in power and out of power.
Another opposite party headed by a former prime minister,Nawaz Sheriff, also enters the fray, hoping to gain by the absence of dynamic leader in the PPP and also clamouring more for democracy especially to undo the things done during the emergency imposed by Mr.Mushraf .
Under the circumstances mentioned above Mr.Mushraf has been making frantic attempts to convince the world that he is a democrat and all is well in Pakistan and for which he has also toured a number of world countries.Above all he has also recently released a dossier on the former sacked Chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and even now kept under house arrest, under what circumstances he was removed and what were all his misdeeds that prompted his removal etc.But we all know very well what happened in Pakistan, what prompted Mr.Mushraf to impose emergency in Pakistan, what prompted him to suspend all civil rights of the people of Pakistan, to keep all the opposition leaders under house arrest and also we know very well that only under the pressure from US and UK,Mr.Mushraf lifted the emergency, announced the general elections etc.
Recently we also hear from somebody that Mr.Mushraf may step down from his post, if opposition comes to power in Pakistan.Whatever may be the credibility of the story or gossip, let us hope that general elections in Pakistan be held in a peaceful and democratic manner without any untoward incident and let democracy first of all prevail in Pakistan!!
