On June 16,12 Maoists killed in an encounter between the Maoist rebels and joint forces in the West Midnapore District of West Bengal.According to Police,on a tip off that 40 to 45 Maoists had gathered at Duli village near Ranja forest in Salboni Police Station area, para-millitary forces and Police surrounded them.When the Maoists opened fire, the forces retaliated.
Just a year ago,on this day (June 18),Paramilitary forces led by Bengal police started offensive against Maoists with success.Lalgarh and surrounding areas became free zones for Maoists for seven months.Top ranking Maoists leaders appeared before the media(without facing the camera).Protesters alleged that corrupt Marxist leaders exploited tribals for years.On June 24,the spokesperson for the Communist Party of India (Maoist) in West Bengal, Gaur Chakraborty, was arrested by the Calcutta Police. He was arrested under Section 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.On July 24, Maoists backed People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) abducted a Police officer and two others at Pirrakhuli,near Lalgarh a tiny hamlet about 200 km away from Calcutta.However,the next day they released the Police officer.On June 30,the Maoists abducted two Policemen, Sabbir Molla and Kanchan Bauri.On September 26,Chhatradhar Mahato, convener of the Maoist-backed PCPA, was arrested by the Bengal Police at Birkar village near Lalgarh in West Midnapore District. He was arrested by Policemen who posed as journalists.On October 5,Raja Sarkhel and Prasun Chatterjee, two activists of a Calcutta based non-governmental organisation, were arrested from Southern part of the city by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for their alleged links with the PCPA leader Chhatradhar Mahato.October 20,Maoists raided Sankrail Police Station in West Midnapore District and shot dead two Police officers and kidnapped the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Police Station.Two days later (October 22),Maoists freed the abudcted police officer before the media at Lakhanpur village in West Midnapore Distric.October 27,armed rebels laid siege to the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express at Banstala Railway Station for five hours, near Jhargram in West Midnapore DistrictOn November 8,rebels killed four Security personnel and looted their arms in Gidhni Bazaar area in West Midnapore District. Kuldip Singh, Inspector General (Western Range), said the EFR personnel were attacked when they were patrolling the area.On Febuary 15,2010,more than 25 security forces personnel, from the Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR), were killed and several others injured when Maoists attackedtheir camp at Silda in West Midnapore.On May 28, At least 100 passengers were killed and 150 injured when suspected Maoists blasted railway tracks in West Midnapore district of West Bengal derailing 13 coaches of a Bombay (Mumbai) bound express train five of which were hit by a goods train.
Maoists in India generally use gelatin sticks and other explosives, detonators.They also use rocket launchers AK47s,INSAS,SLRs.They frequently use improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to attack security forces.Maoists have the access of large number of country-made weapons regularly supplied by illegal arms dealers.Maoists run around 80 training camps in deep jungles all over India.They also use high-tech communication equipments.
