This is indeed the generation of electronic communication, where distances can now be bridged not just by our usual snail mails & the telephone but also with a lot of other technological breakthroughs like the CB radio, fax machine, computer & mobile phone,& almost every year there are significant upgrades to these modern devices plus the introduction of a host of other gadgets that seem to make our connection to the world as easy as sitting down in the comfort of our own home whilst talking to somebody who are thousands of miles away from us.
Its also at the dawn of the computer age as well that online friendships had started to develop. The Internet made it possible with companies such as Yahoo offering free accounts to their clients then a host of other online services followed, making the PC,Mac or laptop an essential item to almost every person’s lives. At first, this thing was looked upon as the easiest & handiest way of reaching out to as many friends as possible worldwide, maybe find a romantic fling or a permanent relationship in any form.
But nowadays even school bullies had taken advantage of the easy access to sites like Facebook to harass anyone they fancy.Online sites also served as a stage for showoffs who wanted to make a scene by appearing naked on cam & saying obscenities to some people after entering their YMs uninvited, even send them obscene photos too.
Yet,not all online stories were that bad. Some either see a true, real friend for life by finding & communicating to this someone from a faraway land who’s just as lonely & alone. They are the ones who always feel they’re "left out" in the crowd & find solace thru their computers .They can also be the ones who try to find the soulmate they’ve been looking for at a time when they think there seems to be no hope at all(this is also my story;i met the hubby online thru some strange circumstances when i’ve given up hope of finding my one).
Indeed, there are lots of phony people who lurk into the complicated web of the computer world every minute of every day .Most of them use bogus names & email addresses. They always wait for the next prey to pounce on,hacking thru their email accounts or leaving viruses there. Some were plain identity thieves who may sway you with a well-orchestrated plan to get your trust & trick you in the end in any way, online or in person.Others were perverts & sexual maniacs prying on girls whom they think are just weak enough to fall into their traps. The list of people who just wanted to take advantage by offering their friendship thru the Internet (or just appearing out of nowhere to bother you) goes on & on.
But do not worry as the Internet also offers friendships that are free of deceit, the kind that are just like in the real world, only that it had to come to you by electronic means first if distance is what keeps you apart from that person or group of people who just wanted to extend the hand of friendship anywhere it’s needed. You only had to take your chances, weed out the ones whom you believe will do you no good & go on with the healthy online relationships you had to enjoy its benefits.
