BNP-led 18-party opposition has called a shutdown for Sunday to protest against the recent critical moves made by the “failed” government including the ban on rallies-processions, and demanded that the autocratic government step down immediately.
The outrageous BNP spokesperson, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, also one of the 47 advisors to the party chief, at the press conference yesterday, however, did not devise the next plans for the evening after the evidently violent hartal day.
Why has the BNP created an “anything can happen”-situation during these crucial days of negotiations for a dialogue on the election-time government?
=== Hefazat secretary general gave confessional statement in a Dhaka court on May 21. According to media reports, he said they lost control on the May 5 Motijheel rally in the afternoon as the 18-party opposition activists engaged in mayhem to implement their plan to topple the government. He also claimed that Hefazat leaders were financed by the 18-party’s Dhaka unit, led by former city mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
Hefazat in a statement the next day claimed that the confession was gleaned from Babunagari forcefully. But they withdrew the statement within hours saying that what they knew from media was questionable and so they were waiting for police report.
The BNP-led 18 party alliance leaders also rejected media reports on Babunagari’s statement saying that it had no organisational or ideological connection with the Hefazat.
===In its full verdict published on May 20, the High Court declared the 1976 court-martial of sector commander Col Abu Taher “illegal and unconstitutional” and his execution a “cold-blooded assassination” masterminded by BNP founder General Ziaur Rahman – the husband of now party chief Khaleda Zia.
The BNP has not protested the verdict and the observations, but its leader Moudud Ahmed claims that the reference – given by the court from his book on Gen Zia’s preparations before the execution – has been explained wrongly.
Update: 4:45am May 28
The BNP Monday announced a hartal for Wednesday protesting the arrest warrant issued against Tarique Rahman, elder son of the BNP chief, in a money laundering case, days after he appeared at a party meeting in London.
A senior leader, MK Anwar, has been arrested in a case filed in connection with derogatory comments on pro-ruling Awami League Swechasebak League leader Debashish Biswas.
Anwar at a press conference on May 6 said he [Debashish] burnt the Holy Quran near Baitul Mukarram Mosque during Hefajat’s violence on May 5. Debashish on May 7 filed the case saying that Anwar’s statement hurts communal harmony.
Awami League maintains that they are ready for dialogue and calls for patience, but at the same time, exercising law, mainly against the BNP and others who oppose the government, abruptly, while denying outright all allegations of corruption against her family and the party high-ups.
