Option Two: Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

If something goes wrong with the much talked-about Pacquiao-Hatton match, the promoters will have an equally explosive option to explore and that is the Pacquiao-Mayweather match

The possibility of a Pacquiao-Mayweather boxing match surfaced today when Mayweather’s father Floyd, Sr.said that her niece informed him of his son’s desire to fight Pacquiao. “My niece said my son told her he wanted to fight Pacquiao next, and that he wants me to train him for the fight” Floyd Sr. said in an interview with reporters.

Floyd, Sr.believes that there is no way that the smaller Pacquiao can defeat his son if ever they fought inside the ring. In another interview, Floyd Sr. said: “Pacquiao can’t whoop any Lil Floyd. Anybody can whoop somebody if they not in shape but if Lil’ Floyd get back in the Gym and get himself together, he could get that. You got to remember, Floyd fought Oscar at 154 pounds. Manny fought him dehydrated; Oscar was dehydrated man and hadn’t made that weight for 12 years, man, and here weighing less than a little man”

Freddie Roach is agreeable to a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight if indeed Mayweather, Jr decides to come out of retirement, but only if they would do it at the catch weight of somewhere between 140 and 147 pounds.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 24, 1977. He comes from a family of boxers. His father, Floyd Mayweather, Sr. is a former welterweight contender. One of his uncles, Jeff Mayweather is likewise a boxer and a former IBO super featherweight champion. Another uncle, Roger Mayweather, a former two division champion, acts as his trainer.

Floyd jr. has a very impressive amateur record. He is a three-time Golden Glove Champion. He is a bronze medalist of the 1995 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Much more impressive is his professional boxing career. He fought 39 times professionally and won all of them. Twenty nine of his professional fights were won via knock out. He remained undefeated until his early retirement last year. His last match was with Ricky Hatton of England where he won by TKO.

The possibility of a Pacquiao-Mayweather boxing fight taking place early next year is real. That is if the promoter’s prime motivation is the size of revenues that the match up will generate. Mayweather is a proven pay-per-view and crowd drawer as recorded in the 2006 de la Hoya-Mayweather match. Pay-per-view receipts of this fight remained unsurpassed until today.

On the other hand, a Pacquiao-Hatton match may generate enormous amount of revenues from pay-per-view and gate receipts primarily because of Hatton’s popularity in UK and the whole European community. If the promoters can get Wembley Stadium as the fight’s venue, there will be substantial amount that can be generated from gate receipts. Wembley can accommodate 25 thousand spectators.
