In 2009, people of Orissa observed earth hour by switching off light and saving almost 75 MW of energy. Again in 2011, 26th March, a major part of Bhubaneswar switched off light to save energy and protect environment from the harmful effects of global warming. Governor of Orissa took lead and switched off all the lights at governor’s house for an hour.
This trend has been continuing since 2007 and in 2009 metros like Mumbai and Delhi observed this along with other cities of India. In Earth hour 2011, one hundred and twenty six nations including India participated by switching off light from 8:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. People of Bhubaneswar in Orissa have saved almost 90MW of energy in this unique event.
