Julio Chavez, Jr. is just 22 years old and undefeated as a professional boxer. He wants to fight the once famous (still is) Oscar de la Hoya who is 14 years his senior. His father, Julio Chavez, Sr. was a professional boxer and fought de la Hoya twice but lost both fights by TKO. There is therefore a bad blood that exists between them. This could probably be the reason why Chavez wants to fight de la Hoya.
Bob Arum was approached by the handlers of Chavez to discuss the possibility of a match up but Arum has not received a word from Oscar de la Hoya. Media reports from Puerto Rico and Mexico confirmed reports that there are indeed preliminary discussions on the possibility of a de la Hoya –Chavez match-up.
According to Arum, as reported in Philboxing.com, ‘my Mexican guys who are with Chavez have talked to me about it. Obviously they are willing of course but I haven’t heard a word from de la Hoya camp, nor will I believe anything until they come to me.’
Oscar de la Hoya lost to Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines in their ‘Dream Match’ last December 6, 2008 held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Arum said, ‘I don’t know whether Oscar is going to fight again or not’
There exists a good possibility that the match up will indeed happen. First of all, Oscar de la Hoya may to let the boxing world know that he is still capable of winning. Secondly, the Chavez de la Hoya match up is definitely a ‘crowd drawer’ which means that the bout will bring in substantial revenues for his own Golden Boy promotions. If he wins over Chavez, he may have a good reason to call Pacquiao for a rematch.
Chavez on the other hand, though young as he is, will try to avenge the losses his father suffered in the hands of Oscar de la Hoya. That would make him feel good indeed. And it will definitely bring so much money into his young and promising boxing career.
