Srinagar, May 13 – Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, B. R. Sharma today said that about 42 per cent polling was recorded in two Parliamentary constituencies (PCs) of Baramulla and Ladakh in the final phase of polling today. He said polling was peaceful and incident-free even as it was the most challenging in terms of geographical area and accessibility among all the five phases of elections in the State.
The Chief Electoral Officer said that Baramulla PC recorded 40 per cent voter out while over 61 per cent electors voted in Ladakh constituency, where poll percentage is likely to go up since information from several polling stations is still awaited. The CEO said that polling could not be held in two of the 476 polling stations in Ladakh Parliamentary constituency as polling parties could not reach their respective destinations in time. “Polling could not be held for 37 electors in Ralakung and Phema polling stations in Ladakh Parliamentary constituency today. We have despatched poll parties by road to both the polling stations. They will walk 45 km over snow for two days and voting will be held there on May 15”, the CEO disclosed while giving details.
Mr. Sharma said that several complaints were registered ahead of today’s poll which were investigated into and found incorrect. ‘Wherever necessary, follow-up action was initiated and additional security forces and Micro Observers were deployed to ensure that polls are held in a free and fair manner”, the CEO said, adding that EVMs malfunctioned at 12 polling stations, out of which two were immediately replaced. The remaining 10 machines were set right.
The CEO said that 19 complaints were received from as many polling stations and the detailed communication network was activated to ascertain the facts. “Eleven of these complaints have been found baseless while reports in remaining are awaited”, he said.
Mr. Sharma said that in order to ensure transparent polls, 267 Micro Observers, 54 video and digital cameras and 100 Zonal and Sectoral officers had been deployed to monitor polling across 1,942 polling stations set up across the two constituencies.
About migrant voters for whom 17 polling stations had been set up at New Delhi and Jammu and Udhampur districts in the State, Mr. Sharma said that about 32 per cent electors exercised their franchise. “Out of the 5,937 total electors for Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, 1,875 cast their ballot,” the CEO said, adding 1,863 migrants cast their votes at 12 polling stations at
Giving details of the poll percentage recorded in the 19 Assembly segments of Baramulla and Ladakh PCs, Mr. Sharma said Karnah recorded 59 per cent, Kupwara 50, Lolab 44, Handwara 67, Langate 43, Uri 37, Rafiabad 63, Sopore 12, Sangrama 27, Baramulla 22, Gulmarg 28, Pattan 29, Gurez 50, Bandipora 32, Sonawari 51, Nobra 70, Leh 50 and Kargil and Zanskar recorded 67 poll percentage respectively.
District-wise, Kupwara recorded voter turnout of nearly 53 per cent, Baramulla 30, Bandipora 42, Leh 52 and Kargil district recorded poll percentage of 67. He said that poll percentage in case of Ladakh Parliamentary constituency is likely to go up since information from several inaccessible polling stations is still awaited. “These were tentative figures as final figures will be available only after receiving Presiding Officers’ diaries of all the polling stations”, he said.
