People according to the National Audubon Society, two bald eagles have built a nest on an inhabitable island off Staten Island; making it the first time in nearly a hundred years – bald eagles are nesting in New York City.
The Captain of a tugboat spotted them early in January as the pair carried materials to an unused dock; even though the exact location was not specified for the birds’ protection.
When I read this on AOL.Com this morning, I was amazed and glad to read the news. It caused me to feel like I wanted to go to New York and take a welcome committee along with me to assure the eagles they would be protected and that if people get too close there would be legal trouble for them.
It’s great to hear that a bird, the symbol of the United States, that was once considered endangered at one time took a liking to the night-lights in New York City and decided to nest there where they’ll be entertained by the hustle and bustle in the city as they go about their life. I’m sure this will be a celebration for everyone in the city.
Bald eagles were almost wiped out nationwide because of the use of pesticide DDT; however, since its ban in the 1970s the population has increased. It’s estimated there are roughly 170 breeding pairs of bald eagles in New York State; and now New York City is home to a pair of them.
I was elated to read this and wanted to ensure those who may have missed the article got to hear this wonderful news. I’ll certainly be looking for them when I return to the city; and who knows, maybe another pair may have joined them?
