PESHAWAR: Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Assembly Thursday passed a unanimous resolution to pay ‘great’ tribute to Muntadhar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who captured global attention when he threw his shoes at US President George W. Bush during a press conference in Iraq last week.
The resolution was jointly moved by Mufti Kifayat of MMA, Provincial Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar, Liaqat Shabab of PPPP, Pir Sabir Shah of PML(N), Sikandar Khan Sherpao of PPP(S) and Qalandar Lodhi of PML(Q).
The Resolution further read that, "as the Iraqi journalist’s action was a reaction to American policies towards Muslim countries, the Iraqi journalist has truely reflected people’s sentiments and NWFP Assembly pays tribute to him."
The house later passed the resolution unanimously .
The NWFP region is home to Pakistan’s tribal communities, over which the Pakistan government has admitted thay have very little control. Bordering Afghanistan, there has been increasing Taliban activity in the region and anti-American sentiment is high.
