Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi has assured the US that his country will work with Washington to fight terrorism.
Qureshi met US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton Tuesday as part of a series of meetings this week in Washington, and as the US is engaged in a strategic review of the situation in Afghanistan and cross border raids from Pakistan.
‘Pakistan is willing to work with the American administration to fight extremism and terrorism,’ Qureshi said. ‘We are determined to defeat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.’
President Barack Obama is reviewing the conflict in Afghanistan and is seeking a comprehensive approach to deal with Taliban militants using Pakistani territory as refuge for carrying out attacks.
The Pakistani government has objected to US airstrikes along the border areas targeting the militants and Al Qaeda, but the attacks have continued. The US has sought to reduce tension between Kabul and Islamabad and to encourage better cooperation.
Clinton will meet Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta Thursday and will also hold a three-way meeting with the two diplomats later this week.
