Pakistan’s unrest may lead to another People’s Power revolt

The recent assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was a reawakening for the Pakistani people. And the country is slowly turning into limbo, with countless people taking the streets to show their intense anger and frustrations over the manner Bhutto was brutally killed.

Now, the question lies as who really masterminded the killing of Bhutto who was revered as a charismatic leader by many of her supporters and admirers. She could have stayed from where she spent in self-imposed exile rather than go back home. But her desire to change what needed to be changed, encouraged her to do so at her own will. U.S. intelligence officials had warned her on the threats against her life, but she persisted on going back. Perhaps, it wasa destiny that she already foresaw, after her late father Zulfikar Ali bhutto was hanged by General Zia Ul Haq many years back.

The same tragedy struck the Philippines when the late Senator Benigno Aquino was killed, after defying odds and threats on his life, just to see political change in his country which at that time, was under many years of a dictator. But like a brave gladiator, he knew that the arena of change wasn’t in exile. So he insisted on going home even if his life was at risk. Even before Aquino could launch his campaign for a change, he was felled by an assassin’s bullet on the head, killing him instantly. Those who escorted him down the tarmac also killed the assassin.

At this point, nobody knows how long will the unrest be. But if things get worse, another people power revolution is in the offing in Pakistan, similar to what happened in the Philippines in 1986 that stalled the politically inexperienced Mrs. Cory Aquino to power.
