In the middle of hurricane Gustav, the Repubican Party found itself in the middle of it’s own storm as Sarah Palin confirmed publicly that her 17-year old daughter is pregnant. What no one could have counted on was that this added to her appeal. American radio and television stations have seen a huge outpouring of sympathy for the Palin family as they attempt to cope with the issue.
The pregnancy and the controversy surrounding it have clearly shown voters that the Palin family is real, and faces many of the same issues thier own face. This is not the picture of the average sanitized politician; when Senator Teddy Kennedy found out he had a malignant brain tumor, he was careful, with great assistance from the liberal media, to remain mostly out of sight until the Democratic convention.
American liberals have gone on the attack about the issue, but are strangely out of touch in their rhetoric. Silly arguments such as whether Palin would have time to do her job and care for her family are forwarded. Other silly statements, such as how can she be conservative if her daughter is pregnant also are promoted by American liberals.
What critics do not seem to understand is that is the way most people around the world live their lives. Children do not always live up to their parents’ values; unexpected events do occur and everyone deals with them as best they can. And people work and take care of their families all the time, usually without all the hand-wringing coming from the Democrats. That’s the way life really is, and if the response so far is any indication, people find it much easier to identify with real life than with idological theories.
