The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
“Operation Enduring Freedom” (OEF) is the official name used by the U.S. government for the War in Afghanistan, together with a number of smaller military actions, under the umbrella of the Global “War on Terror” (GWOT).
“Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Leggett, 39, of Ruskin, Florida, died Aug. 20, in Kabul, Afghanistan, of injuries received when he was engaged by the enemy.
He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.”

Note: Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Leggett, 39, of Ruskin, Fla., was an assistant operations sergeant with A Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion at Fort Bragg.
Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion conducts support operations to XVIII Airborne Corps at home-station and during contingency missions. The battalion will provide logistical, intelligence and communication assistance to the Corps headquarters as it conducts command and control across the entire range of military operations.
“The Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion of XIII Airborne Corps has recently suffered the very tragic loss of a fellow Sky Dragon,” Lt. Col. Gabriel Barton, Leggett’s battalion commander, said in a statement. “Matthew Leggett was an exceptional non-commissioned officer and a valued member of our team.”
Leggett served three combat tours of duty, according to sources at Ft. Bragg.
