Parents I want to make you aware about scoliosis and how it can affect your children throughout their lives if it is not caught in time. Many people in the world have scoliosis, and in a lot of cases it does not interfere with a person’s life at all; but when a person’s spine turns inward and it curves from side to side instead of turning in the proper direction; and when this happens, it’s called scoliosis and the word comes from a Greek word meaning crooked, "scoliosis."
Here are a few of the different types of scoliosis people suffer with, i.e., infantile idiopathic scoliosis, adult scoliosis, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, juvenile idiopathic scoliosis and the most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic.
People who suffer with scoliosis usually suffer with the following conditions:
(1) Uneven leg lengths
(2) One hip higher than the other one
(3) Osteoarthritis
(4) Neuromuscular conditions
Many people who have scoliosis suffer from different types of ailments in their lives too and I’m listing here several of them for people to be made aware of:
(1) Physical problem’s impair people’s lives and it can prohibit good working habits.
(2) Problem’s during pregnancy causes a weight gain and this affects the spine and can cause chest infections and possibly pneumonia.
(3) Deformities from the scoliosis can affect the ribcage, causing injure to the heart and the lungs.
(4) Continuous back pain.
(5) Continuous compression on the ribcage causes breathing difficulties and also inflammation of the vertebra-e’s in the back.
The majority of time when a child has scoliosis it will resolve as they grow older, but in some cases it does not; and this is why I’m writing to let parent’s know to keep a close watch on their children’s spine’s to ensure that they do not have any form of scoliosis developing.
If a parent notices a curve in a child’s back, and if they see it is progressing, it is suggested that parents take them to see a professional doctor for x-rays to determine an outcome. If this disease is caught in time, it will prevent any deformity in a child’s maturing and developing spine.
The severity of the curve’s angle of the spine will normally determine if the severity of the angles get worse than those with mild angles. It’s been said that girls are affected with scoliosis more than boys are.
My niece had scoliosis when she was a child and it progressively got worse and they had to operate on her and run a rod up her spine to correct it – it is a tedious operation and it takes a long process to heal, she is fine now and the scoliosis has not been affecting her anymore.
I don’t believe that it has ever been determined if people with scoliosis can exercise, have physiotherapy treatments or can go for chiropractic treatments. I know though that an orthopedic brace is an option for treatment but it does not guarantee it will cure the disease.
In some cases, the brace may cause the spine to grow straight when they’re in their adolescences stage or it might prevent the curve from getting any worse; and this could possibly delay the requirement for spinal surgery for a while.
Posterior spinal fusion and instrumentation surgery may be recommended for those people with severe cases of scoliosis.
Scoliosis occurs for "no" apparent reason and professionals call it idiopathic scoliosis (which means, "the cause is not known"). Scoliosis may be the result of an illness, an injury to the spine, or a birth defect. It is not the cause of poor posture.
