South Sudan Legislative Assembly in Parliamentary session while liberating on the party act has restricted opportunities to tribal owned parties from registration. The act indicates that a party must have ten thousand members and above and that the party must be from a dynamic diversity not only from a state. The act stated that for a political to qualify for registration, it must be represented at least by 200 members from each state or minimum seven states.
Many South Sudan existing parties which were registered under old Sudan Government are formed in tribal basis, but now all the parties are to be registered under the Republic of South Sudan. Opposition and those with tribal parties quit the Parliament after the majority of the MPs agreed with the act.
Hon. Dengtiel Kuur the chairperson of the committee and a member of Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) stressed there will be way for the ethnic based political parties in the country anymore. “Tribal parties cannot promote peace in the nations, so all political parties should be represented in all the states of south Sudan to encourage pace in the Nation” Kuur continued
The act also states that membership shall be open to any South Sudanese National who agrees to comply with the goals and principles of a political party. it as well affirmed that, any south Sudanese national who has attained the age of 18 years old shall have the right to participate in the establishment of a political party and to become a member or to join any other political party.
The leader of opposition in the Parliament Mr. Anyoti Adigo and member of the Sudan people Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) said that the figures put above will restrict many small upcoming parties “it will not work to have the two hundred members in a state for a party to register, so this is a restriction being put already” Adigo also added that south Sudan will remain with only one or two political parties if it sticks on the five hundred members per state.
