Kabul: Nearly 100 people have been killed and 50 more wounded in a suicide attack during Afghan Parliamentarians’ visit to a sugar factory in northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan Tuesday. A number of Parliamentarians are among the dead and wounded. Most of the casualties are school children, according local officials.
The attack was aimed at Parliamentarians but a large number of people were gathered to welcome them and inaugurate the factory. 12 parliamentarians are believed to be killed in the attack.
Interior Ministry of Afghanistan and provincial police sources have confirmed the incident saying over 100 people have been killed and wounded but not confirmed the exact number of the dead and how many of them were the parliamentarians.
Local officials have told the name of only Mustafa Kazami, the parliamentarian and spokesman of the United Front, a political party which was formed in near past against the President Karzai. Another prominent parliamentarian and deputy agriculture minister Shukria Barakzai was among the wounded.
It is the worst suicide attack in Afghanistan’s history as the rate of the casualties is very high and many of them are top officials in Northern provinces.
’50 of the dead are civilians including school children and local people who were happy for the factory in their area’ said Provincial Governor Mohammad Alam.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai in a statement condemned the attack and and said that it was an act of the enemies of peace and stability in Afghanistan.
In Northern provinces, Baghlan, home town of former jihadi leader Ustad Sayyaf, is the province where terrorist attacks are common and not only women journalists but also parliamentarians have been killed in the past.
