Leh, December 16, (Scoop News)- The Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh Rigzin Spalbar terming pashmina of Changthang the “Gold” of Ladakh.He strongly emphasized upon the nomadic people of Changthang to stick with their ancestral occupation, which is the only ultimate sustainable source of income in these region and urged them to adopt new methods and technologies for value addition of pashhima products.
Rigzin Spalbar was addressing the 2nd Annual Cashmere Spinning Presentation of Pangong Women Self Help Group at Lukung village situated on the bank of Pangong Lake at a distance of 150 Kms from Leh on the eastern border of Ladakh. Sponsored by Wild Fibres Magazine, Ladakh Frontier Travel and LAHDC, Leh the main purpose of the organization is to promote value addition of pashmina products through the latest technology of fibre spinning and weaving in Changthang region.
CEC Rigzin Spalbar expressed happiness over the initiatives of Wild Fibres Magazine and Ladakh Frontier Travel for facilitating and providing training to the Women SHGs in border villages of Changthang in fabricating pashmina products and hoped that such kinds of training at small scale will prove very beneficial in guiding pashmina trade of Ladakh towards new destination in big way.
CEC also underlined the initiatives of Council for development of pashmina and mentioned Rs: 42 crore project under 12th five year plan for promotion of sheep husbandry which stand sanctioned under Ministry of Textile, GoI for Ladakh adding that this project is aimed to make harsh lifestyle of nomadic people easy in the challenging climatic conditions of Changthang providing various essential facilities like Rebo type tents, multipurpose Solarized Torch long Rubber Gum Boots, pashmina comb, etc under the scheme.
Earlier, the editor and publisher of Wild Fibres Magazine Linda Cortright expounded in detail about their mission that is to understand the role of natural fibers having playing a vital role in developing cultures and supporting communities throughout the world. Assuring her support in days to come, she urged upon the women of Changthang to have patience in fabricating pashmina products which has immense potential to change their livelihood completely.
The owner of Ladakh Frontier Travel Konchok Stobgais, Superintendent Handloom Dept, Leh Tsering Angchik and Sarpanch Pangong village Tsering Angchuk also expressed their views.
