Jammu, January 20 (Scoop News) – Peoples Democratic Party on Friday held a free Langar ( Kitchen) at Jammu to help bring some respite to the passengers who have been braving torment following the closure of national highway.
Visiting the stranded passengers to expresses their sympathies senior PDP leaders including General Secretaries, Mohd Dilawar Mir, Th Balbir Singh , Senior leader and MLA Ab Rehman Veeri and Syed Bsharat Bukhari and others, today lashed out the government for its ‘slow and apathetic approach’ to the crisis of stranded travellers at Jammu. They said that plight of these passengers, amid the hollow claims of NC dispensation, is yet again symptomatic of its failures and has exposed the rhetoric and tall government claims.
They said that stranded passengers, most of them at Jammu’s general bus stand, have been facing hardships and have also ran out of money in the bitter cold. Since the first snowfall, government has forgotten about their plight and its snail approach has further intensified problems due to mismanagement of traffic and lack of communication on the highway’s condition, they said.
The leaders said the government made banner announcements that until the road is cleared, the stranded passengers would be provided free food, whereas, on the contrary, the passengers are on the verge of starvation and are being taken undue advantage of by civil and official institutions. Given the situation at the highway, fat sums are being charged to them for renting a blanket or a room and the situation is turning very grim.
Considering the circumstances of overcharging by restaurants, private transporters and hotel owners, and government’s failure to check this activity, the Peoples Democratic Party today held a free kitchen to help the stranded travellers suffering immense problems due to closure of highway and government’s unable response. The leaders demanded that the stranded passengers be immediately airlifted which could bring an end to their plight. They also demanded free medical facilities for the passengers until the traffic at the highway resumes.
The leaders also said that areas adjoining to Jammu district are still cut-off due to non clearance of the snow by government, even after so much time has passed since the snowfall. They said that government should try to act for a change, instead, of remaining stone cold to the situations around them.
