Peaceful and total shut down in Jammu region on Central University issue

 

 

 

 

Jammu, August 10, (Vijay Kumar): The entire Jammu region witnessed complete shutdown  Jammu region on Monday in response to day long strike call issued by the Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS) over the issue of setting up of central university in Jammu region.

 

The day long bandh passed off peacefully as no untoward incident was reported from any part of the Jammu city and nearby areas.

The bandh call was also supported by  Bharatiya Janta Party, various socio-political, student and religious organisations.

 

CUAS had given a bandh call after high level talks with the state government failed to yield fruitful results. The state government had made several attempts to pacify the members of the Andolan Samiti to call off the stir while giving them assurances but the Andolan Samiti pressed for written assurance.

 

During the bandh, state BJP Chief Ashok Khajuria  courted arrest near Kacchi chowni while he along with supporters  of the BJP were taking out procession raising the demand for setting up of central university in Jammu region

 

Prominent city market places  and business establishments across Jammu  remained closed  throughout the day and markets wore a deserted look since early morning. Kathua, Vijaypur, Samba  Udhampur and RS Pura also witnessed complete shut down in support of the demand.

 

In Jammu , schools and colleges also remained closed and state government offices wore thin attendance as transport and passenger vehicles remained off the roads. Tourists/pilgrims reaching Jammu enroute Mata Vaishno devi shrine and other tourist destinations faced many hardships in the absence of

transport services. Various student bodies of Jammu university and state run government degree colleges supporting the bandh call took out peaceful processions at several places and burnt down effigies of the state government demanding early setting up of Central University in Jammu region.
