Weeks ago US Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who herself is a superdelegate and remained neutral in the US Democratic race, has said that a nominee must be picked before the Democratic National Convention set to take place in Denver, Colorado, this August. Then, she also gave the argument that the superdelegates should support the candidate with the most pledged delegates.
Currently, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are virtually tied in terms of pledged delegates. Despite Clinton winning two major victories in the March 4 contests, Obama still retains his marginal lead amongst pledged delegates.
So far, several of Clinton’s major fundraisers attacked Pelosi’s argument. They have requested that Pelosi drop the argument. However, it would look as the request has little to no effect on Pelosi’s opinion. As a result, Pelosi is sticking to her guns on this one. Pelosi firmly believes that the Democratic Party will be damaged if the superdelegates go against the will of the voters.
Early on, Pelosi said that the superdelegates could not afford to remain on the fence any longer. So far, this argument benefits Obama the most. However, it would benefit Clinton if the wins from Florida and Michigan have counted.
However, Pelosi still stood firm on her argument. At the same time, this letter would look to hurt Clinton’s campaign even more. A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll has revealed that Clinton’s approval rating has reached a new all time low.
Many Democrats in Washington, DC have called the letter to Pelosi as a bad strategic move. This could be perceived as the Clinton campaign trying to intimidate Pelosi.
