Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning will need 4-6 weeks to recover from knee surgery he had on Monday July 14.
Manning had an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee. Doctors say that the procedure was routine and carried little chance of causing long-term problems. Manning has been suffering from an inflamed bursa sac since February but did not need surgery until it had recently become infected and painful. The colts are confident that Manning will be able to start the season opener on September 7.
The bursa sac is a small, fluid-filled pocket that provides padding between muscles, tendons and bones around a joint. There are bursa sacs around almost every joint in the body and protect the joint and surrounding materials from jarring impact and irritation.
