Manila – The Department of Education or DepED, in the Philippines, is asking those with more – to donate to those with less. The education department’s goal is for more public-private-partnerships for play to help those with out any sports equipment and toys for younger children that they have outgrown.
Think of the movie toy story, which I like my eldest kind of cried a bit on the end off when the all grown up boy – gives up his toys and playthings to those kids in small day care center.
Truthfully, many of us now in adulthood still hold onto toys we had years ago – somewhere in this house – my sons first infant toys – like a little squeaky bear still sits. No longer played with but, there – a reminder – of babyhood long gone as my kids have grown. (sorry DepEd squeaky bear is too special – but maybe something else?) Perhaps another toy or gift given years ago might be something my boys now more into apps and virtual games can be given.
As I am sure readers of MikeinManila.com all have one or two ‘special items’, too near and dear to be parted with because they hold some meaning for parents who got them and the kids who played with them.
So like, Andy, who going off to college, gave up his boyhood toys in Toy Story 3, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, and all their friends, Who while had to deal with danger and entry into kindergarten at Sunnyside day care – eventually escaping from the that situation to find homes after returning to Andy’s box of memories.
But remember how the toys, left a note for Andy, saying toys needed to played with? How Andy, in a coming of age – How Woody, even though Andy was taking him off to college with Buzz. Woody Remembered his time with Bonnie and her toys, Woody’s idea, he leaves a note to Andy on the toys’ box.
Andy, thought it was a note from his mom, takes the box to Bonnie’s home, He introduces his old toys to Bonnie and gives her the toys to play with. In the end, Bonnie recognizes Woody, who is lying at the bottom of the box, very much to Andy’s surprise. Andy to whom Woody is a part of childhood, doesn’t really give his favorite Toy to her, seeing the little girls eyes and so much joy in them at seeing Woody, Andy does give in but, spends time playing with her before he departs.
See, while it hurt Woody and the other toys to leave Andy – they know that all toys – want and played with, So make your old Toys happy and some young child too…
Heres the DepED press release:
May 12, 2011 press release by the Department of Education
Education Secretary Armin Luistro enjoins the public, especially kids, to donate toys and other educational materials that could be used by the public school children who will enter kindergaten this June through the universal kindergarten aspect of the K+12 program.
Universal kindergarten requires all five-year olds of families that cannot afford pre-school to go through kindergarten in public schools in order to better prepare them when they enter Grade 1.
Luistro is leading a donation drive that aims to collect educational toys, books, and materials for the 1.9 million kindergarten students that are expected to enroll in the 38,000 schools and daycare centers nationwide.
“This is a project that will allow every Filipino to support education. If every Filipino is able to do something, even a small thing like giving up an old toy, it’s a message that’s worth repeating and expanding nationwide,” the education chief said.
During a “meet and greet” session with some 150 beneficiaries of the DOLE-initiated Special Program for the Employment of Students, Secretary Luistro encouraged the students to be advocates of the campaign.
He suggested that they devise a scheme so they can take part in collecting toy and book donations within their neighborhood, families, peer circles, and schools.
“If all of us pitch in for this donation drive, we could transform a typical kindergarten classroom into a laboratory that can better prepare our young learners to the real world of formal schooling and provide them greater chances to complete their education,” the Secretary said.
