Philippines needs local broadband technology

Nobody seems to get the point as to how government officials are hell bent on sealing a contract with a Chinese contractor to set up a national broadbank network in the Philippines.

Now, the government has suspended the project even as there were allegations that some government officials have already gotten huge sums of money as advance payment for the shady deal. Some legislators welcomed the move of President Arroyo to suspend the contract so as to put a stop to the worsening controversy which already gone out of hand. But many of them, especially those from the opposition, are clamoring for the complete cancellation of the deal. That means they wanted to scrap it totally.

What some concerned observers are suggesting is to scrap the deal and instead tap the local technology, rather than wasting our foreign exchange receipts on foreign projects, which the Filipinos can surely undertake with the same quality of work. Isn’t it a great insult to our local engineers and technologists by tapping the technology of a foreign nation like China? Come to think of it.
