Staff of the Movenpick Hotel and Spa Karon Beach in Phuket, Thailand, surprised guests with a flash mob dance sequence to the popular song “Gangnam Style” on September 28th.
Almost all of the dancers were members of the hotel staff, although the crowd did include a few professional dancers who were disguised as tourists and hotel employees. Even hotel general manager Hansruedi Frutiger was in on the dance scene action. His part took place towards the end of the routine.
Nampetch Tipaxsorn, director of marketing communications for the Movenpick Hotel, explained, “We did this as a surprise for our guests, and to do something different in Phuket.” She said the routine had been planned for quite some time; the participating staff members practiced twice a week for two months at the Phuket Danz Step Studio. Choreographer Jarvey Dela Paz developed the dance routine and helped the hotel employees to learn it.
A flash mob is a group of people who seem at first to not know each other as they gather in a specific place. At the given time, they perform an unusual task or routine and then disperse back into the crowds. The flash mob routines often seem spontaneous to those who witness them, but they are carefully choreographed and rehearsed. You Tube contains video of many flash mob routines, including large dance numbers at New York City’s Grand Central Station and London’s Liverpool Street Station.
The Movenpick Hotel’s dancing flash mob has attained some amount of internet fame; the You Tube video of the dance has already received over 4500 views.
Archie Ward, from Thai digital marketing agency Andaman SEO says that "This is the kind of ‘real world’ stunt that you want to crossover into digital marketing. It’s already earnt the hotel a lot of new YouTube subscribers.
