A passenger plane crashed in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday killing all 153 on board. While the exact cause of the crash is unknown, President Goodluck Jonathan pledged a thorough investigation as well as efforts to improve aviation safety within the country.
The Dana Air operated aircraft was coming in from the capital Abuja when it hit a building during the landing process. Upon impact, the plane reportedly burst into flames, producing thick smoke in the surrounding area. A number of people on the ground were also believed killed, among at least three people from the damaged two-story building.
The incident generated immediate chaos with thousands of people crowding around the smouldering building remains, thus hampering rescue efforts. The influx of onlookers prompted soldiers to clear out the area, using strong-arm tactics to access to the crash site. Fearing their own safety, people dispersed in several directions, avoiding the rubber whips and fists used to control the crowd.
Following rescue efforts into the evening, Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren stated, “we don’t believe there are survivors.” In light of this tragedy, President Goodluck Jonathan directed that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast during a three day period of national mourning.
