Thousands of commuters were stranded in various locations in the Midlands in UK as a single engine aircraft crashed into power lines and burst into flames near the Colwich junction in West Midlands.
As reported by guardian co.uk,’Two people died when a light plane crashed near the West Coast main line in Staffordshire yesterday forcing the suspension of services on one of the busiest rail networks in the country and leading to delays that are likely to spill over into the weekend’.
A network rail spokesman said all services through the heart of England between Rugby and Stafford would be suspended until today at the earliest as the emergency services faced a ‘race against time’. The report added.
It could not be determined as yet what caused the accident. The aircraft was piloted by 59-year old Allan Matthews from Walsall West Midlands.
Paramedics rushed to the scene within three minutes according to the West Midlands ambulance but there was nothing that could be done.
Rail services between London and Manchester. Liverpool and Glasgow were most severely affected.
Kath Wyllie, 52, said she was sitting in her lounge when she heard a high-pitch whirring noise. ‘There was an almighty crash. The house shook. I shot up and shouted to my partner, there has been a train crash’ She added,’ All I can see was fire and smoke, There were people running over, members of the public, all on their phones, calling the police’.
Virgin trains said it cannot be ascertained how long the transport situation will normalize. Rerouting are being planned which would take passenger longer than the usual routes to their destinations.
