Of Hajo’s many temples, that of Hayagriba Madhab is the most well known. Though a Hindu temple, some Buddhists believe it contains relies of the Buddhist and that it was here that he attained Nirvana. Not surprisingly, a large number of Buddhists from come in reverence to Hajo every winter.
Also at Hajo is the mosque built by Pir Giasuddin Aulia. It is known as a `Poa Mecca’ in acknowledgement of the belief that it has one-fourth (EK –Poa, in Assamese), the sanctity of Holy Mecca. While you are at Hajo, savor the delight of its famous doi (yoghurt), it is thick, creamy and altogether out of this world.
