Jammu, January 22 (Scoop News) – Wildlife Protection Department, Jammu Wildlife Division, while conducting routine anti-poaching patrolling, intercepted two unknown scooter born persons at Chhalla in Ramkote Forest Range of Tehsil Billawar.
Officials of Wildlife Warden in a statement said,when scooter born persons were asked to stop, they fled away giving the anti-poaching party a slip and leaving behind their scooter bearing registration No.PB02N-8835, a plastic bag and two spears. The wildlife officials on opening the bag found the carcasses of three wild animals viz. Jackal, Civet cat and Jungle cat (one each). The bag also contained five iron traps used by them for trapping the animals. All the articles including scooter and carcasses of the animals were seized by the wildlife officials. The Department got the postmortem of the killed animals conducted by the Animal Husbandry Department at Kathua. FIR has been lodged under the sections of the J&K Wildlife Protection Act. 1978.
Officials said that the animals were killed for their commercial value and meat. The civet cats were killed for musk glands, Jungle cats and Jackals were killed for their pelts. The wild animals including Jungle cat, Jackal and Civet cat are specified under different schedules and given protection under the J&K Wildlife Protection Act 1978. The killing or hunting of wild animals, except under certain conditions, is banned under section 8 of the Jammu & Kashmir Wildlife Protection Act 1978 (amended up to 2002) and warrants legal action. Any person held guilty of committing this offence shall, on conviction, be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six years and also with fine up to twenty five thousand rupees, depending on the schedule of the animal and location of the commitment of the crime (hunting) e.g. Sanctuary, Conservation Reserve.
