A police corporal, Miss Salamatu Alaiyeka, attached to the Paiko Road Police Station in Minna, Niger State, on Sunday suddenly ran mad after reading some portions of the scripture. In less than 24 hours later, she killed the 18 months old son of her sister.
Daily Sun reliably gathered that the policewoman’s neighbours and colleagues at the station had noticed her unusual attachment to the reading of the holy book.
She, however, started behaving abnormally on Sunday when she visited her colleagues who were on duty. This made them to send an urgent message to her home. Her sister and the husband, Mallam Isah Adamu, a banker for Africa (UBA) were said to have come for her.
According to the sister’s husband: "I was shocked so terribly that I didn’t know what to do immediately, other than to tell my wife, her sister. We rushed to the station and met her colleagues trying to pin her down. Fortunately, we had no difficulty convincing her to follow us home.
"At home, she became so calm that nobody would have thought she was insane a few hours ago. She even asked her sister to prepare food for her, and she ate very well and we all went to bed thinking that the worst was over.
"Salamatu woke up the following morning still in her normal senses, recited her prayers and helped the sister with some house chores.
"She took my two children out only for the elder one to run back inside panting. By the time we located Salamatu, she was trampling on my son, Isah, who, by that time, was dead."
Oguche Richard Adamu, ASP, Public Relations Officer, Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stressing that Salamatu was being detained at the Tundun Wada police station in Minna.
At the station, relations of the bereaved family were seen discussing with the police on the need to secure the release of the corpse of the deceased baby in line with the dictates of their religion.
Mallam Isah Adamu described the incident as an act of God, pointing out that he was not ready to press any case against his sister in-law.
