Is our news media letting us down when it comes to international coverage? A recent survey from MPO Research Group found that most Americans think there is room for improvement when it comes to coverage of international issues. When asked what they think about the coverage of international news, only about a quarter think the current level of coverage is fine. Over half of all Americans say there should be more of it.
Younger groups are the most interested in seeing more international news coverage, while those in their forties are the least interested. This group is also the happiest with the current amount of international coverage in American news media. Americans over the age of fifty are the most likely to want less international coverage.
Desire for more international news coverage increases with education. Respondents with university and post-graduate degrees are most likely to think there is not enough international coverage and also the least likely to think there should be less of it. Those with masters degrees o PhDs are the least happy with current levels of coverage.
All political groups say they would like to see more international news coverage, though Republicans are slightly more likely than Democrats and Independents to say they wish there was more, and are also the least likely to say we need less.
Among ethnic groups, Caucasian respondents reflect the least amount of interest in increasing international news coverage. This group is also most likely to think there should be less coverage. African Americans are the most likely to want to see more international stories covered, while Hispanics are the happiest with the current level of coverage.
