As Hurricane Ike slams the Texas coastlines with winds over 100 miles per hours, most people followed mandatory evacuation warnings and ran for high land. Some of those who did not are enjoying a drink at the Poop Deck, a landmark bar in Galveston that looks out over the Gulf of Mexico. Just as it does during all storms, the Poop Deck will welcome customers and keep the party going until police force them to close down.
Everything I own and love is on the island," said Jacqueline Harris as waves smashed the Galveston seawall only feet away. "It nature is going to come and get us, bring it on!"
Some say they are staying put so they can avoid the hassle of heavy traffic out of the area and the task of finding a place to stay for a few days. Others want to experience a hurricane first hand.
The owner of the Poop Deck, Marie Alrich-Creasy, says that she is not endangering anyone by keeping the bar open for business. "The doors are open," she says. "If anyone wants to come, that’s their free will."
